Fall Education Series: When Codes are in Conflict – Building Science and Life Safety in Wood Framed Construction

September 4, 2024 by mbraun

Thursday, September 19th, 2024 @ 11:00 AM

Course Title: When Codes are in Conflict – Building Science and Life Safety in Wood Framed Construction

Course#: GAF23LL25 – 1 AIA LU – 1 IIBEC CEH

Presenters: GAF

Join us for our fall education series hosted by R3NG! Changes in building codes now challenge designers of wood-framed, mid-rise multi-family projects to balance life safety, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency. NFPA 13 sprinkler requirements can increase condensation risk, especially with vented low-slope roofs. Many designers use non-vented roofs with rigid insulation above the deck to address this, which often leads to NFPA 13 requirements. Developers sometimes use non-combustible insulation to avoid these requirements, necessitating careful vapor control. Enclosure consultants need to grasp Type V construction codes and associated risks. This presentation will cover code compliance strategies and building science principles to reduce condensation risk, with examples of effective and compliant roof systems.
